BMX Open House… Fun For Everyone!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our BMX Open House this past Thursday. There were lots of burgers and great deals on everything BMX. However, the hit of the evening was the FOOTDOWN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP event. Close to 40 riders took part in 2 separate competitions. 9 and under was ‘total points’ taking 3 rounds to decide the top 3. 10 and over included more than 25 riders also with a 3 round elimination, leaving 9 bikes for an exciting main event. Thanks to Gary and Kevin for officiating the event, Denver and Spencer for staying late to help out and clean up, to Dale for flipping burgers, and to OMA for running around and filling in all the gaps. Fun was had by everyone and all profits from the BBQ were donated to the Kelowna BMX Club. Next scheduled open house is for Thursday, November 18, 2010… Winter Backcountry Wine & Cheeser… see you there!

ABA BMX National… August 13-15

The 4th stop on the Canadian ABA BMX National tour took place in Prince George this past weekend … looks like our Kelowna teams did very well. Click here for race results. Next stop is Thanksgiving weekend in Chilliwack for Canadian Grand Nationals.. indoor BMX racing at it’s finest! Best of luck to racers competing in this very competitive national circuit.

DH/Freeride Camp at Silver Star July 24-25

LAST CALL for Mad March Racing DH/Freeride camp at Silver Star this coming weekend! This camp is designed for beginner to intermediate ADULT riders looking to hone their downhill and freeride skills. The clinic will begin with a skills assessment and then focus on techniques for cornering, line selection, jumps, wall rides drops and more! Riders will build solid confidence and be safer and in more control on technical trails! This is a great opportunity to hone your skills to play out the season. The minimum numbers for this clinic will be 6 and maximum 12.

Skills Park Official Opening – Sun July 25th

Sure, it’s been open to the public for a couple of weeks, but we can’t let this landmark event pass without a party. So we’re having one.

There will be demos, a Jump Jam and contest, music, and lots of cool stuff. The Jump Contest will be open to anyone who is an MTBco member, and we’ll be there early to sign people up. Prizes for the jam are being donated by all the local shops. Read more…

What began as the basis of a hiking and biking publication has evolved into the Okanagan’s most comprehensive online repository of singletrack data.

Sweet Singletrack provides you with downloadable GPS and Google Earth files, full-color maps and detailed trail descriptions representing 46 chapters of the ‘book’. In all, this information encompasses well over 100 local trails; N-S between Oliver and Summerland, E-W from Apex Resort to the 201. Numerous bits of local history and interesting articles are also included. A $10 fee entitles you to unlimited website access.

This website is formatted in a manner that renders it’s contents accessible to both computers and wireless devices, including iPhone, iPad, Blackberry & other 3G units. You are thus able to view maps, text and GPS tracks while in the field; cellular reception is described within each chapter. GPS tracks may also be pre-downloaded to devices and used in those few areas lacking reception via caching & software ‘Apps’.

Bicycles & Organic Vegetables… Together!

Green City Acres is a pedal powered urban farming/edible landscaping company dedicated to sustainable food production. We utilize back yards and urban spaces to grow organic produce for local distribution. All of our farming operations including farm maintenance, transportation of crops, restaurant deliveries, weekly farmers markets, and moving of our 300 lb. rototiller, are all done with our bikes and trailers. Our mission is to foster social and environmental change through the production of local organic food, with minimal use of fossil fuels, and to help, teach, and empower people to start growing their own.

At Green City Acres we use a method of farming called SPIN (Small Plot INtensive) to grow a variety of different crops to be sold to restaurants, farmers markets, and eventually directly to consumers through a CSA (community supported agriculture) box program. We also want to help you build a garden and start growing your own food. We have the equipment and expertise to tear up your lawn and reclaim it for food.

Food for Everyone! Weekly farmers market, restaurant sales, and a downtown vegetable stand.

We should have some things from the garden available as soon as late April or early May. With all this great weather we’ve been having, it’s given us a huge jump start to the season. When harvesting begins, we will be at the Kelowna farmers market on Springfield every Saturday, and sometimes Wednesday. Our produce will also be available to select restaurants, plus there will be a simple stand set up outside of the Ethel street farm on Thursday early evenings for anyone in the neighborhood who’d like to grab some greens. Stay tuned for the exact time of that.

We’re still looking to supply a couple more restaurants for the 2010 season. Along with your weekly produce orders, we offer a free compost pick-up/drop-off service. All your kitchen vegetable scraps will be composted on our farm sites to be eventually used as soil amendments for future crops. More about the composting program here.
